It is with sorrow that we announce the death of Julia T. Johnson who passed on Tuesday, July 9 at the Centre Care facility in Bellefonte, PA. Julia was 92 years old. She was born Julia Teresa Woloszyn on November 7, 1931 in Ellwood City, PA, daughter of Mary and Julian Woloszyn.
She is survived by Leon J. Johnson, her loving husband of 72 years, and her three children, Marlene Porter, William L. Johnson and Nina J. Mata.
Julia raised her family, worked part time and took night courses at Penn State until she earned her B.S. in Education in 1976. She worked for the State College Area School District as a middle school social studies/civics teacher for twenty five years, retiring at age 70. As a teacher, she led the Youth in Government Club. The highlight of the year was their annual trip to Harrisburg to visit the State Capitol building, always awe inspiring.
Julia loved growing and working with herbs and using them in cooking and decorations. She and her husband were early contributors to the first farmer’s market in State College which started in the 1970’s and was for years on Fraser Street in downtown State College. She was known for her Bread and Butter pickles, which always sold out.
A special thank you from the family to all the thoughtful caregivers who took care of Julia in her final years.
Memorial service will be at 3 p.m., on Thursday, July 18, 2024, at Koch Funeral home, 2401 South Atherton Street, State College, with Celebrant Jackie Naginey Hook officiating.
