Penn State Flips 4-Star Recruit From Virginia Tech, Former DC Brent Pry

Penn State has flipped a highly touted recruit from Virginia Tech and former Nittany Lion defensive coordinator Brent Pry. Four-star athlete Matthew Outten on Monday announced his commitment to the Nittany Lions as a member of their 2025 recruiting class.

Outten, who has the ability to play either wide receiver or defensive back, is listed by 247Sports as the No. 9-ranked player in Virginia and the nation’s No. 341 player overall. The 6-foot, 200-pound Outten, who attends I.C. Norcom in Portsmouth, Virginia, is the 24th prospect to commit to Penn State this cycle.

It’s unclear exactly what position Outten will play, but given the fact that wide receivers coach Marques Hagans has served as his primary recruiter, perhaps his future lies in the pass-catching realm.

Outten joins linebacker Cam Smith as the second player this cycle to flip to the Nittany Lions from a program coached by a former defensive coordinator. Smith committed to the program in August after previously pledging to Duke and Manny Diaz.

Outten also joins four-star tight end Matt Henderson as the second player from Virginia to announce a pledge to James Franklin’s 2025 recruiting class, which is currently ranked No. 14 in the nation, according to 247.
