Former Penn State quarterbacks coach Jay Paterno gave an emotional speech about his father’s battle with lung cancer Saturday afternoon at the opening ceremony of the Relay For Life event at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Joe Paterno died Jan. 22 from complications of lung cancer treatments.
“You hear the word cancer and a chill comes over you,” Jay Paterno said. “Cancer had not hit my family until seven or eight months ago and my father battled against it every day.”
Penn State’s Relay For Life event had raised more than $58,000 for the American Cancer Society at the outset of the event.
Donations can be made at the Relay For Life website.
