Centre County reported 27 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday — its highest increase in nearly three months — to bring its total to 17,216, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Pennsylvania added 1,811 positives to increase the commonwealth’s total to 1,241,843.

The county also reported 100 negative test results for a total of 73,734. Statewide, there were 6,546 new negatives for a total of 4,982,837.

Centre County remains at the substantial level of community transmission — the second highest on the Centers for Disease Control scale — as of the CDC’s most recent county-level data update on Tuesday afternoon.

Because of the transmission level, Centre County government facilities, several local municipal buildings, State College Area School District and Penn State are requiring all individuals, regardless of vaccination status. CDC guidance issued in July states that all people in counties with “substantial” or “high” levels of transmission should wear masks in public indoor settings, regardless of vaccination status.

According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 14 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Centre County, unchanged from Tuesday. One is in intensive care and on a ventilator.

COVID-19 hospitalizations statewide continue to increase. Pennsylvania has 908 COVID-19 inpatients an increase of 61 since Tuesday, with 224 in intensive care [+20] and 113 on ventilators [+8].

DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus among Centre County residents, keeping the total at 228 for the 40th consecutive day.

With 11 new COVID-19 deaths statewide, Pennsylvania’s total is now 27,925.

An estimated 96% of COVID-19 patients in the state have recovered, according to a DOH calculation.

DOH did not update county vaccination totals as of noon on Wednesday. As of Tuesday, 78,485 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated and 5,873 are partially covered.

Vaccination appointments for ages 12 and older are available through Centre Volunteers in MedicineMount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.

Among Centre County’s cases, 15,669 are confirmed and 1,547 are probable.
