Penn State men’s basketball has added four-star guard Jameel Brown to its 2022 recruiting class giving the Nittany Lions their first marquee recruiting win under new head coach Micah Shrewsberry and one of the program’s highest-rated verbal commitments ever.
Rated the No. 111 prospect in the nation and the No. 2 prospect in the state of Pennsylvania by the 247 Network, Brown is the third member of Penn State’s 2022 class joining three-star prospects Evan Mahaffey (PF) and Kanye Clary (PG) who both verbally committed over the summer.
Brown was previously committed to Purdue having been recruited by Shrewsberry while the then assistant coach was still with the Boilermakers. Brown would eventually open his recruitment following Shrewsberry’s departure from Purdue to Penn State.
The six-foot-four, 190 pound combo guard hails from the Haverford School just outside of Philadelphia and plays with the state’s top prospect and the nation’s No. 5 recruit Dereck Lively. Penn State recently made Lively’s – a Bellefonte native – Top 7 schools.
The duo are also Team Final teammates with Penn State target Otega Oweh, bother of former Penn State defensive end Jayson Oweh who now goes by his first name Odafe as a member of the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL. The younger Oweh is a four-star shooting guard and rated the No. 86 overall prospect in the nation and the No. 3 prospect in the state of New Jersey.
A program source indicated to StateCollege.com that there is optimism about Oweh’s decision, which could come in the next few weeks.
Historically Brown is the third-best verbal commitment in the 247 Network era just behind Tony Carr and Lamar Stevens. Carr was rated .9801 and Stevens at .9449 while Brown sits at .9386.
