Centre County Gazette

STATE COLLEGE — In its ongoing efforts to bring a performance arts presence to State College and the Centre Region, the Phoenix Academy of Performing Arts of Pennsylvania is proud to present a two-day Circus Intensive Silks Workshop on Wednesday, Nov. 5 and Friday, Nov. 7 from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m.

The workshop will be open to all skill levels and offered at Phoenix’s permanent space at 118 Hawbaker Industrial Dr. in Patton Township, just up the hill, above Otto’s.

Renowned aerial coach and performer Shannon Sexton will present the exciting world of aerial fabrics. She has toured and competed internationally performing in diverse settings such as 60 feet hanging off a bridge (Invisible River, Philadelphia) to flying over theme parks (Nytewalker, San Jose).

During this two-day, workshop students will begin to learn the primary skills, safety, strength, and flexibility required to work with this fun and challenging apparatus. The goal of this workshop is to help give students the key components and to understand how Aerial Silks work, while helping them accomplish the skills being taught in a positive and encouraging learning environment. This workshop will leave students with the curiosity and motivation to learn and experience more.

Dmitry Myers, the Circus Arts Program and Creative Director said, “We are so pleased to be able to bring Shannon here for this Workshop. She is passionate about teaching and brings an impressive teaching and performing background including almost ten years on the faculty of the Philadelphia School of Circus Arts. We are fortunate she is available to do this.”

The workshop will be open to all ages from years 10 to adult. At a cost of a total of $150 per participant for the complete two, two-hour sessions on Nov. 5 and Nov. 7, a discounted cost of $125 is offered to all students enrolled at Phoenix Academy.
