CENTRE COUNTY — Centre County has recently been heating up, hitting temperatures in the 90s. While some fun in the sun can be an enjoyable experience, it is always important to stay cautious about the impacts of extreme heat.

Consider the following tips to ensure that you stay safe this summer:

  • Stay hydrated — Drinking plenty of water is crucial during a heatwave to prevent dehydration. Older adults should aim to drink water regularly throughout the day, even if they don’t feel thirsty. According to the National Institutes of Health, “The standard recommendation (for older adults) is to drink eight glasses of water per day.” It is also recommended to avoid beverages that can lead to dehydration, such as alcohol, caffeine and sugary drinks. These can increase urination or cause the body to lose more fluid. Keeping a water bottle nearby and setting regular reminders to take sips can help maintain adequate hydration.
  • Stay cool indoors — Staying cool indoors is vital during extreme heat. Air conditioning is the most effective way to stay cool, so spending time in air-conditioned places, whether at home or in public spaces like shopping malls, libraries or community centers, is highly beneficial. If air conditioning is not available, using fans can help circulate air. To reduce indoor heat, close curtains or blinds during peak sun hours to block out direct sunlight.
  • Dress appropriately — Wearing the right clothing can make a significant difference in staying cool. Loose-fitting, lightweight and light-colored clothes are preferable as they allow for better air circulation and reflect rather than absorb the sun’s rays. Materials such as cotton are ideal as they are breathable and can help wick away sweat.
  • Wear sunscreen — Penn Highlands Healthcare recently shared in a statement the importance of SPF, noting “To ensure adequate protection from the sun’s harmful rays, it is important to choose a sunscreen that offers both UVA and UVB protection. This will protect your skin from the effects of ultraviolet-B rays, such as sunburns and skin damage, as well as ultraviolet-A rays that can increase the risk of skin cancer.”
  • Stay in touch with loved ones — Implementing a buddy system during a heatwave ensures that someone regularly checks on you. This could be a family member, friend or neighbor who can ensure that you’re safe and coping well with the heat.
  • Plan for potential power outages — Having a plan for power outages is crucial, as they can disrupt air conditioning and other cooling methods. Prepare by having battery-powered fans and portable power banks to keep essential devices charged.

Preparing for anything that comes your way is key to staying safe. While these tips may seem like small actions, they can make a big impact in the long run.
