BELLEFONTE — Centre County Commissioners at their recent meeting adopted a proclamation calling attention to hunger and different hunger relief efforts in the area.
Thus, September in Centre County is Hunger Action Month.
There is an ongoing and urgent issue of food insecurity in Pennsylvania. More than 1.5 million residents struggle with food insecurity — that is, one in eight adults and one in six children.
One in eight adults or one in eight children struggles to maintain reliable access to food.
Despite growing food costs in recent years, the county and its partners, such as Central PA Food Bank, local food banks, churches, YMCAs, and Lions Clubs, have remained committed to providing food to the people of Centre County.
In Fiscal Year 2025, nearly 2.5 million pounds of food from Central PA Food Bank alone were directed to Centre County residents in need.
Local food banks play a vital role in distributing and supplementing the regional food bank’s work. The ability of the local food banks to continue providing these services rests on the generosity of our community.
Commissioners encouraged Centre County residents, businesses, and community groups to take action throughout September by supporting local food banks, volunteering their time, and advocating for policies that address food insecurity.
Katie Kerr, Government Relations Coordinator with Central PA Food Bank, cleared up myths about food insecurity and need for food in the region. Notably, Kerr mentioned that post-COVID, there has not been a reduction in need; rather, their services have been consistent and have been proven to provide relief for many families.
Commissioner Amber Concepcion noted the importance of donations to local food banks, especially monetary donations. Concepcion mentioned that donation money affords food banks more flexibility in stocking up on what the community needs, whether that is food, toiletries or other essential items.
