UNCASVILLE, Conn – Penn State traveled to Connecticut to take on Providence in the Hall of Fame Showcase at the Mohegan Sun Arena where the game was just a one-point game with under four minutes left to play.
But Providence pulled away in the final minutes, making the final score 77-65 — giving the Nittany Lions their first loss of the season.
Freddie Dilione V was the star for Penn State in this game. He finished with his career-high 22 points he shot 4-8 from behind the three-point arc in this game. This is now his fifth consecutive game scoring double digits. Dilione V finished with nine rebounds, which led the Nittany Lions in this game while also finishing with four assists and two steals.
Star freshman Kayden Mingo had the worst game in his young career, where he finished with two points, two rebounds and three assists.
Providence was led by Stefan Vaaks who finished with 15 points, five assists and three rebounds. Vaaks made the most threes for the team in the game where he shot 3-11 from behind the three-point line.
The game was a back-and-forth battle from start to finish, featuring five ties and 12 lead changes. Although Penn State held the lead for just 12 minutes compared to Providence’s 27, the Nittany Lions remained within striking distance throughout. However, Penn State’s youth showed in the final minutes, as Providence capitalized late to pull away and secure the win.
