BELLEFONTE — The Undine Fire Co. No. 2 has announced plans to construct a permanent helipad on its property in Bellefonte, providing a safe and reliable landing area for Life Flight helicopters during medical emergencies.
For years, emergency helicopters have used the fire company’s grounds as an informal landing site when responding to accidents and critical calls. Recognizing the vital role this space plays in saving lives, the Undine Fire Co. is donating a portion of its property to create a dedicated helipad that will improve safety, access, and response times.
The helipad will be named in honor of Richard “Rich” Kelley, a longtime firefighter, EMS leader, and Assistant Chief with the Undine Fire Co. No. 2. Kelley’s decades of service, leadership, and compassion made a lasting impact on emergency response throughout Centre County. His mentorship, warmth, and dedication to helping others inspired everyone who served alongside him. The helipad will stand as a permanent tribute to his legacy of service and community care.
“This project is all about strengthening emergency response for our community,” said Fire Chief Gary Lohr of the Undine Fire Co. No. 2. “Naming it after Rich Kelley is a way to honor a man whose entire life was devoted to saving others.”
To bring the project to completion, the fire company is asking for donations of materials and supplies from local businesses. Each business that contributes will be recognized on a 4×8 vinyl banner displayed on the property fence, celebrating the community’s shared commitment to safety and service.
