Lady Red Raiders roll to win over P-O in season opener

Todd Irwin

BELLEFONTE – The Bellefonte girls soccer team, which won a District 6 Class 3A title last season, opened the 2025 season in dominating fashion, rolling to an 8-0 win over Philipsburg-Osceola on Aug. 25 at home.

Freshman Brinley DeWeese, sophomore Addalyn DeWeese and junior Sydney Miller scored two goals each. Addalyn DeWeese also assisted with two goals. Senior Brooke Whitman and freshman Kaylee Knepp also scored. The Lady Red Raiders peppered P-O with 27 shots on goal.

“The girls played well tonight, and I was excited to see them come together as a team to secure the victory on our senior night,” Bellefonte coach Stacey Miller said. “They controlled the ball, passed, and possessed well tonight. It was a great overall team effort.”

Bellefonte freshman goalkeeper Ronni Spotts only faced two shots, and she turned both away.

“Although the end numbers of the game show a bad loss, I can proudly say that the PO lady Mounties never gave up or put their head down while playing this very talented team,” P-O coach Courtney Getz said. “They gave 100 percent the entire time they were out there, and I am very proud of them.”

BALD EAGLE AREA GIRLS

Most of the Centre County soccer teams were scheduled to begin playing the week of Aug. 25 (see the schedule below), but the Bald Eagle Area girls team got the jump on everyone in the county.

The Lady Eagles opened with a 2-1 loss at Central Mountain on Aug. 23. They also lost at Bishop Guilfoyle, 8-0, on Aug. 25.

BEA’s Aiyanna Henninger scored her team’s lone goal in the second half off of an assist from Madilyn Jones. Central Mountain scored both of its goals in the first half on boots from Reese Warner and Lily McGonigal.

“We dug ourselves a bit of a hole in the first half, giving up two goals,” BEA coach Jared Moore said, “but we made some adjustments in the second half and held a good Central Mountain team scoreless.

“Maddy Jones had a great game today. She fed a beautiful ball through to Aiyanna Henniger, who finished a great shot on a breakaway. I was really happy with how we rebounded in the second half and we put a great push on in the final 15 minutes, but were unable to find an equalizer unfortunately.”

BEA goalkeeper Cami Walker made seven saves, while Central Mountain’s Alyssa Ford stopped five shots. Central Mountain had a 4-0 edge in corners.

BG held a 23-7 shots on target advantage over BEA, as well as a 4-1 edge in corners. BG goalkeeper Emily Steffan made seven saves.

“We faced a very good Bishop Guilfoyle team this evening,” Moore said. “They moved the ball very well on us and we had some trouble clearing the ball and they capitalized on it. We had some chances to score, but were unable to come away with anything unfortunately. The girls fought hard and never gave up.”

STATE COLLEGE GIRLS

The State College girls team opened the season with a 2-1 loss at Carlisle on Aug. 25.

State College’s Natalia Andrews scored at the 25-minute mark off of an assist from Leah Sampsel. Carlisle got goals from Samantha Knisely in the first two minutes of play and Avery Fitzgerald off of a rebound about 30 minutes into the game.

“The girls shook off some early jitters and played well,” State College coach Kent Dwyer said. “We had a choice to make after conceding early, and we chose to compete.”

State College goalkeeper Kathy Schmeck made six saves, while Carlisle keeper Elisabeth Bordner made six stops.

STATE COLLEGE BOYS

The State College boys soccer team battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie with Carlisle on Aug. 25 at home.

Alex Zlupko scored the only goal for the Little Lions. No other information was available at press time.
