Korinya to host benefit concert for Ukraine

STATE COLLEGE — The artful young musicians of Korinya will perform at 1 p.m. on Feb. 25 at The State Theatre in State College.
Korinya (ko-REE-nya) means “roots” in Ukrainian. The band will play the best of traditional Ukrainian folksongs in a lively, uplifting style. Those attending are encouraged to stamp their feet and clap their hands to Ukrainian kolomeyka and hopak dance tunes that will remind them of Irish jigs and reels with their boundless energy. Exquisite vocals will be presented in the traditional Ukrainian style.

The band describes itself as a contemporary folk band with a fresh grassroots sound. Its music is as bright as the traditional Ukrainian costumes they wear. Korinya is fun and entertaining, and its music is unique and unforgettable.
All the proceeds from the concert will benefit the local Sister’s Sister charitable organization, which is sending aid to the war-damaged city of Nizhyn in Ukraine. Visit sisterssister.org/ to learn more about the organization’s activities in Nizhyn, which, like State College, is a college town with a large university.
Tickets will be $10 for adults and $5 for students and children. The theater will add a convenience fee of $1 to $2 per ticket.

There will be opportunities to give additional donations in the lobby of the theater by check, cash, Zelle or Venmo for those wishing to do so. Advance tickets are available on The State Theatre website as well as at the box office.

The event is co-sponsored by the Penn State Ukrainian Society, the Woskob Family Endowment in Ukrainian Studies and the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures. Other businesses and organizations are welcome to co-sponsor the event. Contributions to Sister’s Sister, which is a registered 501(c)(3) charity, are tax deductible.

Feb. 25, 2023, will mark one year and one day since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. See more about Korinya at korinyaband.com/.
