CENTRE COUNTY — The crayons on the table of your favorite family-friendly restaurants keep kids occupied before their meal starts, but in many cases, these art supplies get thrown away when the table gets bused. In fact, more than 60 million crayons are discarded each year in the United States alone.
Because crayons are not biodegradable, disposing of them improperly can harm the environment. A better destination for these gently used crayons than the landfill is a classroom near you.
An initiative called National Crayon Collection Month, celebrated in August, invites families and teachers to ask restaurants to save their discarded crayons and donate them to their local schools.
