STATE COLLEGE — The Centre County Sports Hall of Fame recently held its annual golf outing, The Blue by You, on Monday, June 30, at the Penn State Blue Golf Course.
A first time for the annual golf tournament, two Ladies Professional Golf Association golfers, Sophia Schubert and Jackie Gallagher-Smith, joined the 25 groups of 100 golfers total. Schubert is a former All-American at the University of Texas and a United States Amateur Champion, while Gallagher-Smith is a former All-American at Louisiana State University and is also a United States Amateur Champion in addition to being part of a prolific golfing family.
The event, now in its 10th year, sold out and had a record profit of $21,797; the funds go toward scholarships for high school students at six Centre County high schools. Additionally, the event featured more than 70 business sponsors from throughout Central Pennsylvania.
At The Blue by You golf outing, the first-place team of Billy Edwards, Trent Miller, Andy Riley and Steve Turchetta shot a 55. The second-place team consisted of Barry Parkhill, Bruce Parkhill, John Hilton and Fritz Wild. Third place went to the team of Jake Corman, Davis Corman, Jacob Corman and Doug McKee.
“There was an opportunity to win $20,000 with a Hole-In-One on #14, but the closest shot was 7 feet,3 inches by George McMurtry,” the Centre County Sports Hall of Fame explained in a news release. “McMurtry also won closest to the pin on #17 at 5 feet,10 inches. Mike Valyo hit it to 15 feet on #4, and Joe Biegle hit it to 5 feet,9 inches on #8. Long drive winners were Zack Davis and Tori Sergeant, and the straightest drive belonged to Mona Ostrowski.”
Edwards, who led the first-place team, is one of the owners of the Clinton County Country Club. The second-place team was led by two State College natives, All-Americans, Barry and Bruce Parkhill. The third-place team was captained by
two All-Americans who grew up in State College, Barry and Bruce Parkhill. The third-place team was captained by former State Senator Jake Corman and a couple of his sons, in addition to 2025 Centre County Hall of Fame Inductee Doug Seig.
Seig, who will be inducted in October, was an All-State quarterback at Bellefonte Area High School and is now a managing partner and CEO of Lord Abbett in New Jersey.
