Centre County Adds 23 COVID-19 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 1,844 New Positives

Centre County registered 23 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The new cases bring the county’s total to 35,435 (31,433 confirmed and 4,002 probable). Centre County’s seven-day moving average for new cases is 20, level with a week ago and up from 9.7 a month ago.

Pennsylvania recorded 1,844 new positives — the third consecutive day with at least 1,200 — to bring the statewide total to 2,803,378.

The commonwealth’s seven-day average is 1,310 up from 1,091 a week ago and 646 a month ago.

Hospitalizations

Mount Nittany Medical Center has four COVID-19 inpatients, one more than on Wednesday. None are in intensive care or on ventilators, according to the hospital’s COVID inpatient dashboard.

COVID-19 hospitalizations statewide slightly increased for the fifth consecutive day. Pennsylvania hospitals have 509 COVID-19 patients, three more than on Wednesday, with 70 in intensive care [+8] and 32 on ventilators [-6].

Deaths

DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus among Centre County residents for the 11th consecutive day, keeping the total at 348.

With 28 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is 44,578.

Community Level

Centre County remains at the “low” community level for COVID-19 for the sixth consecutive week, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s latest update on April 14.

Community levels measure new cases, new hospitalizations and local hospital capacity to determine mitigation guidelines. At the low level, there is no recommendation for indoor masking.

Statewide, 64 of 67 counties are at the low level, with Bradford, Sullivan and Susquehanna at the medium level. At the medium level, the CDC recommends masks indoors in public for those at risk of severe illness. At the high level, universal indoor public masking is recommended.

Prison cases

Centre County’s two state prisons — Benner and Rockview — have no COVID-19 cases among inmates or staff, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.

At Benner, 1,417 inmates are fully vaccinated, 20 are partially vaccinated and 199 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 306 are fully vaccinated and 323 are not vaccinated.

At Rockview, 1,703 inmates are fully vaccinated, two are partially vaccinated and 79 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 350 are fully vaccinated [-1] and 368 are not vaccinated [+1].

Vaccinations

As of Thursday morning, 95,258 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 28 since Wednesday, and 14,233 are partially covered [+1]. Booster doses have been administered to 50,418 county residents [+39].

Among the county’s entire population, 70.2% have received at least one dose, 59.7% are fully vaccinated and 51.7% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 75.6% have received at least one dose, 63.8% are fully vaccinated and 54.3% have received a booster.

Statewide, 77.7% of adults and 68.2% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in MedicineMount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.

All individuals age 12 and older are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot. All individuals 50 and older and certain immunocompromised individuals are now eligible for a second booster shot.
