Extreme cold temperatures will cause at least two Centre County school districts to have delayed starts on Tuesday.
State College Area and Philipsburg-Osceola Area school districts will operate on a two-hour delays because of extreme cold and anticipated icy conditions, according to messages from the districts to familieis.
The National Weather Service at State College has issued a cold weather advisory for Centre County from 7 p.m. Monday to noon on Wednesday.
Arctic air moving into the area will cause frigid temperatures through Wednesday, with forecasted highs just above 10 degrees and lows dipping below zero. “Wind chills as low as 10 to 15 below zero” are expected according to NWS.
“Frostbite and hypothermia are possible if precautions are not taken,” according to the advisory. “If you must go outside, dress in layers. Cover exposed skin to reduce your risk of frostbite or hypothermia.”
Tuesday morning in the State College area will see temperatures around 2 to 3 degrees, with a RealFeel of -4 to -7, according to AccuWeather. The daytime high is expected to reach 14 degrees with the nighttime low reaching -2.
Wednesday is also anticipated to be nearly as cold, with a high of 13 and a low of 6.
Things will start to improve on Thursday, however, when AccuWeather forecasts a high temperature of 30 degrees for the State College area.
