Penn State guard Myles Dread will use his extra year of eligibility and return for a final season in State College he announced Tuesday afternoon. Dread played through the entirety of the 2021-22 campaign with an injured shoulder and underwent surgery following the conclusion of Penn State’s season in the Big Ten Tournament.
“I will be returning to Penn State to utilize my extra year of eligibility,” Dread wrote on Twitter. “I look forward to leading tis team and giving everything I have as we set out to accomplish our goals.”
Dread is able to return due to an NCAA ruling that gave at student-athletes and extra year of eligibility if they were enrolled during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dread averaged just over six points per game, the lowest mark of his career, but shot 40.5% from beyond the arc, the highest rate of his four-year career so far.
The longtime Nittany Lion is the first to announce his return this offseason following not long after guard Sam Sessoms’ announcement that he would enter the transfer portal. Dread will look to be a key piece in Penn State’s transition between the current roster and a Nittany Lion group that will welcome five new freshman to the fold this summer.
Fellow longtime teammate Seth Lundy is also expected to announce his return as well, although Lundy has yet to do so.
