Penn State football will start spring practice on Monday, March 21, the program announced on Monday, just less than a month prior to the opening stages of the 2022 season.

The Nittany Lions are looking to improve on a 7-5 campaign that saw Penn State put together a mixed bag of good and bad performances with close games – both losses – against Ohio State and Michigan in spite of starting the season 5-0 with wins over Wisconsin and Auburn. Penn State, fighting off injuries, won just two of its final eight games of the year despite finishing No. 6 in the nation in scoring defense giving up just 17.3 points per game.

Penn State will welcome back quarterback and three-year returning starter Sean Clifford as well as highly touted five-star freshman prospect Drew Allar. Running back and Gatorade Player of The Year, Nicholas Singleton and defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton also headline a talented incoming 2022 freshman class.

The Nittany Lion open their campaign on Thursday, September 1st against Purdue in West Layfette to start Franklin’s ninth season at Penn State. The schedule also features trips to Michigan, Auburn and Indiana while Penn State will welcome Ohio State to Happy Valley for the first home game against the Buckeyes with a Beaver Stadium home crowd since 2018. The 2020 meeting in State College took place with no fans in attendance.

Penn State will finish the spring practice period with its annual Blue White game on April 23, although it remains to be seen if that event will be held in the form of practice like it was last season or an actual scrimmage as per the traditional format.
