Penn State Athletics Reports Seven Positive COVID-19 Results Following Latest Round Of Testing

Penn State Athletics reported seven new COVID-19 results on Wednesday as part of the department’s weekly testing release.

Between January 2 and 8, the department administered 1,094 tests, resulting in seven positives. As per usual, Big Ten health and safety procedures require that student-athletes be tested at least once per day and in turn, total test administered is not a reflection of total people tested.

Wednesday’s reported figures bring Athletics’ cumulative positive tests to 216 since testing began over the summer. Penn State has performed 22,632 tests since student-athletes returned to campus.

Centre County announced 133 new cases on Wednesday as the commonwealth added nearly 8,000 as well.

Last week, an undisclosed number of positive coronavirus tests within Penn State’s men’s basketball program led to postponements of four scheduled games and a temporary pause on team activities. It’s unknown how many of those positive tests ultimately turned out to be actual COVID-19 cases.

The Nittany Lions resumed practice this week and are set to play Purdue on Saturday, January 17.
