Former Penn State linebacker and defensive end Jesse Luketa was selected 256th overall in the seventh round of the NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals, giving Penn State eight draftees as the event came to a close just six selections after Luketa.
Luketa joins teammates Jahan Dotson, Jaquan Brisker, Arnold Ebiketie, Jordan Stout, Tariq Castro-Fields, Brandon Smith and Rasheed Walker as former Nittany Lions to have heard their name called since the three-day event started on Thursday night. Dotson led the way being selected No. 16 overall by the Washington Commanders in the first round of the draft.
“In drafting Jesse Luketa, the Cardinals just selected a player who absolutely loves the game of football,” said Penn State coach James Franklin. “I am a huge fan of Jesse and am proud of all he has accomplished within our program. His knowledge of the game, physical nature, and ability to play multiple positions will allow Jesse to enjoy a successful NFL career for years to come. We were able to take advantage of Jesse’s versatility this past season, lining him up both at linebacker and defensive end, and his eagerness to embrace that role will prove valuable in any NFL locker room. In addition, Jesse demonstrated what it meant to be a true student-athlete, earning his degree in criminology. We are so happy for Jesse and are excited to see him compete at the next level.”
Penn State’s eight draft picks are the most for the program since 1996 and five defensive draft choices are the most – tied – since 1992.
At the conclusion of his Penn State career Luketa had recorded 143 tackles, having played at both linebacker and defensive end. He also registered seven tackles for a loss an recorded eight pass deflections. Luketa had an up and down career in the early going but blossomed in his dual role at linebacker and defensive end in 2021.
Luketa managed eight tackles in Penn State’s win over Auburn and nine in the Nittany Lions’ eventual loss to Arkansas in the Outback Bowl.
