The annual THON 5K will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, and will cause traffic and parking restrictions that will impact a number of Penn State Athletics events.

The 5K supports THON’s yearlong effort to raise funds and awareness for the fight against childhood cancer. The $10 registration fee will go directly to benefit Four Diamonds at the Penn State Health Children’s Hospital and will help cover 100% of the costs of patient care, as well as fund life-saving research.

Those interested in registering for the 5K event can still do so on THON’s website. Registration will also be available the day of the race by visiting the registration table by Gate A of the Bryce Jordan Center, where the race will begin from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Festivities will be held outside the Bryce Jordan Center starting at 9 a.m., with a pep rally at 10:45 a.m., a kid’s race at 11:15 a.m. and the THON 5K beginning at 11:30 a.m. Live music from Donnie Burns and the 3rd Degree will be performed until the closing announcements at 1:30 p.m.

To accommodate the THON 5k route, the following campus roadways will be closed from 11 a.m. to approximately 1 p.m. on Sunday:

  • Porter Road (from Curtin Road to Hasting Road)
  • Hastings Road (from Porter Road to Bigler Road)
  • Bigler Road (from Hasting Road to Pollock Road)
  • Pollock Road (from Bigler Road to Burrowes Road)
  • Burrowes Road (from Pollock Road to Curtin Road)
  • Curtin Road (from Burrowes Road to Porter Road)

Because of the THON 5K, fans attending Penn State the field hockey (noon) and the women’s soccer (1 p.m.) games are advised to park in Stadium West , as the road closures will not allow for parking in other lots.

Women’s volleyball (1 p.m.) fans should park in the Nittany Deck and will not be impacted by closures. Fencing (8 a.m.) and men’s soccer (4 p.m.) should not be impacted by closures. However, fencing spectators should access the HUB Parking Deck from Shortlidge Road only and avoid Pollock Road from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

General event parking will be available in Stadium West and Jordan East. For those attending the field hockey game, those with prepaid ParkMobile permits from either Jordan East or Stadium West or permits issued by the Transportation Services department will be valid in the Yellow H lots at Wagner and Shields Buildings. Fans should plan on accessing these lots by 11 a.m.

After 11 a.m., fans should park in Stadium West – noting access to Stadium West is available only from Park Avenue. After approximately 1 p.m., Curtin Road in front of Wagner and Shields will be reopened to normal traffic with only Curtin Road from University Drive to Porter Road remaining closed.

Parking is available two hours before each event. There is no charge with a valid Penn State Parking permit. All other parking must be purchased through ParkMobile for all events. Parking can be purchased in advance for $5.50 through the ParkMobile site or $10 day of the event.

ADA parking in Stadium West will be available at the southwest corner of Stadium West near the intersection of University Drive and Curtin Road. This parking area is only accessible via Park Avenue. A valid state-issued ADA placard or license plate is required, along with a valid Penn State permit or parking purchased from ParkMobile.
