Penn State’s 31-14 win over Boise State on Tuesday at the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona, was a night filled with historic achievements and season superlatives.
Improving to 8-0 all-time in the Fiesta Bowl, the Nittany Lions won their second College Football Playoff game and advanced to the CFP semifinals for the first time. They’ll face the winner of Thursday’s Sugar Bowl matchup between Notre Dame and Georgia on Jan. 9 in the Orange Bowl.
Along the way, running backs Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton combined for 221 rushing yards and became the first teammates in Penn State history to each run for 1,000 yards in the same season.
Tight end and Mackey Award winner Tyler Warren, who was named offensive player of the game, pulled in six catches for 63 yards and two touchdowns. His touchdown catch in the third quarter set a program record for receptions in a season with 98, surpassing the previous mark set in 2013 by wide receiver Allen Robinson.
The Penn State defense, despite losing All-American Abdul Carter to injury in the second quarter (his status for the Orange Bowl is not yet known), held Boise State’s Heisman runner-up running back Ashton Jeanty to a season low 104 yards on 30 carries for a 3.5 yards per carry average and no touchdowns. Jeanty came into the game averaging 192 yards per game and 7.7 yards per carry, and had only been kept out of the end zone one time this season.
