Penn State’s Season Opener at West Virginia Suspended Due to Lightning

Penn State’s season opener against West Virginia has been suspended after a lightning strike was reported in the area. Fans were asked to evacuate the seating areas shortly after halftime, which the Nittany Lions entered with a 20-6 lead. 

Fans have been asked to seek shelter on the concourse, in the restrooms, indoor practice facility or to return to their vehicles. The Mountaineers announced this past week that the game had sold out.

The rain has started to fall in Morgantown as the clouds darken. There is no update on a restart time.

A National Weather Service special weather statement said strong thunderstorms will impact the Morgantown area until at least 3:15 p.m. and a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 7 p.m.

Drew Allar led the way offensively in the first half for Penn State with 199 passing yards for three touchdowns. A pair of his passing scores came from wide receiver Harrison Wallace III, who has already captured a career-high 117 receiving yards.
