As Penn State passes the midpoint of fall camp, head coach Matt Campbell’s squad is rapidly shifting focus from fundamentals to finer details ahead of its first live game simulation inside Beaver Stadium this weekend.
Between a high-profile freshman testing a new position and key depth pieces solidifying the running back rotation, the full picture for the 2026 Nittany Lions is beginning to take shape.
From Passer to Pass-Catcher
The most notable news of the week centers on freshman Peyton Falzone. Although recruited as a four-star quarterback, Campbell revealed Thursday that Falzone spent the past two practices taking reps at tight end to maximize his on-field impact early in his career.
The transition highlights the freshman’s raw physical traits. Falzone arrived on campus with a vertical jump exceeding 38 inches and a sub-4.50-second 40-yard dash, according to Campbell. Additionally, he’s listed on the roster at 6-foot-5 and 216 pounds. Over a two-day span, those athletic traits translated well.
“Peyton made some really special plays with the ball in his hands,” Campbell said. “He’s a guy that’s got so much athleticism. Is there more that we can do early on where he can help our football team? I give him a lot of credit because he did what was best for the team and wanted to make that move.”
Campbell noted that the long-term plan leaves the door open for Falzone at quarterback, but the coaching staff remains eager to utilize his athleticism across the offense.
Running Back Roundup
On offense, progress in the running back room continues. Ohio State transfer James Peoples drew high praise following Wednesday’s practice, earning distinction from Campbell as the “star” performer of the session.
Peoples demonstrated a well-rounded portfolio across three critical backfield responsibilities.
“Great tailbacks can do three things really well,” Campbell said. “They can run the ball, they can catch the ball in the backfield, but most importantly, they’ve got to be able to pass protect or you can’t keep them in the game. He had a really all-around great day.”
Alongside Peoples, fellow running back Quinton Martin Jr. continues to hit key developmental marks. Martin weighed in at 215 pounds, according to Campbell, holding steadily within the staff’s target window of 215 to 220 pounds.
Proving his physical gains can withstand the workload of fall camp puts him in a better position to see playing time this fall while competing for reps against Peoples and Carson Hansen.
Saturday Scrimmage
These individual evaluations lead into Saturday’s live scrimmage inside Beaver Stadium, which serves as the program’s first full-contact benchmark of the preseason.
Up to this point, evaluations have occurred primarily on the practice fields. Saturday’s session forces players to execute base formations and schemes inside the stadium environment with full pads.
“Getting in the stadium, forcing ourselves to play in that stadium… is really important for us,” Campbell said. “Where are we? What is this football team? Are the formations that we’re getting into on both sides of the ball showcasing the right players?”
With position battles nearing an ultimatum, Saturday’s live reps will help separate the pack in terms of gameday readiness as kickoff nears.
