A Penn State football letterman is entering a new role this season.
Former Nittany Lion great Michael Mauti has been named the director of football engagement, according to the team’s online directory. He previously served as the associate director of development for Intercollegiate Athletics at Penn State, a role he began in 2024.
Head coach Matt Campbell has been adamant about involving former players with the program, and this move emphasizes that. Campbell previously added letterman Jordan Hill to staff this offseason as the director of the Penn State Football Letterman’s Club.
Mauti played linebacker for the Nittany Lions from 2008-2012, totaling 207 tackles, 4.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and four interceptions. Though injuries cut two of his seasons short, Mauti finished as a first-team All-American in 2012 and won the Butkus-Fitzgerald Award, presented to the top linebacker in the Big Ten. A large part of his reputation in State College centers around his leadership in the fallout of the Jerry Sandusky scandal, opting to remain with the team under head coach Bill O’Brien.
Mauti was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the seventh round in 2013, playing for two seasons before spending another three with the New Orleans Saints. He totaled 58 tackles, one sack and two forced fumbles in the league.
