For THON canners this weekend, here’s the good news:
You’ll be a lot warmer this time around.
From Washington, D.C., north to New York City, high temperatures over the weekend are expected to range from 37 to 53 degrees, according to AccuWeather.com.
That’s well above the temperatures in the 20s that THON supporters saw on their last canning weekend, in late January.
This weekend marks the fourth and final canning weekend of the 2010-2011 fundraising season for THON, or the Penn State Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon.
Hundreds of Penn State students from more than two hundred organizations participate in each canning weekend, a chance for them to solicit cash contributions from passers-by in public places. The student volunteers fan out across the northeast, often from New York south to Virginia.
All the money goes to support THON, billed as the largest student-run philanthropy in the world. Proceeds benefit pediatric-cancer research and treatment.
Fundraising efforts culminate each February with a 46-hour, no-sleeping, no-sitting dance marathon at the Bryce Jordan Center. This year’s marathon is scheduled for Feb. 18 to Feb. 20.
THON supporters are welcome — and encouraged — to share photos from their canning-weekend trips with StateCollege.com. We’ll post them in a photo gallery on the site.
Photo submissions may be sent via e-mail to adam.smeltz@statecollege.com or via Twitter to @SCNewsDesk.
