VIDEO: Thousands Converge at Old Main for Candlelight Vigil in Paterno’s Honor

A crowd estimated in the thousands — perhaps 10,000, if not more — gathered late Sunday on Penn State’s Old Main lawn to mourn Joe Paterno.

The student-led candlelight vigil ran just more than a half-hour. It included music from the university Blue Band and an a capella group, Blue in the Face, as well as remarks from several current and former football players.

From the vigil, thousands of the mourners marched on to the Joe Paterno statue outside Beaver Stadium. There, many left behind candles, shouted the ‘We are … Penn State’ cheer and shared stories.

Campus police partially closed surrounding streets at the stadium to help accommodate the crush of pedestrians.
