Ferguson Township will be getting a beautiful new park soon, but it doesn’t have a name yet.
That’s where you come in. The township will be accepting park name ideas from its residents through its website until August 3.
The 17-acre area will be next to the residential neighborhoods of Westfield and Hillside Farm Estates and within walking distance of Pine Grove Mills.
“The land was set aside when the Westville and Hillside development was built,” says David Modricker, director of public works at Ferguson Township. “There was a master plan done for this location and we always planned there to be a park. After finally getting grant funding, the first step was to develop a park.”
According to Ferguson Township assistant manager David Pribulka, the township received a $200,000 grant from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
The money will go toward building a playground, multi-use fields, a sledding hill, and a lot more.
“The construction of the park is currently in progress,” Modricker says. “We expect the construction to be done this fall but depending on how soon the winter comes the final seeding and landscaping could be postponed to next spring.”
Giving the park a new name was approved by the Ferguson Township Board of Supervisors on Feb. 17, 2015.
“The reason for new name change was because Westfield/Hillside Farm Estates Park was too long and complicated,” Pribulka says.
The Centre Region Parks and recreation Authority will review all suggested names on August 20. Then the Ferguson Township Planning Commission will review suggestions on August 24, and on September 7 the Board of Supervisors will approve a name for the park.
If you want to submit a name idea, but don’t know what kind of name the township will approve, there are many options.
You can choose a name of a famous landmark, a nearby street, or even name it after a famous resident who lived in Ferguson Township.
“So far we have had six name submissions,” Pribulka says. “The way to submit a name if you choose to can be found online under the township’s website.”
