It<92>s November, and along with chilly weather this month also means gearing up for holiday season. State College is pretty year around, and it<92>s made only more beautiful as the Christmas lights are strung up along the streets and the snow begins to fall. There<92>s no shortage of Christmas fun this year, and this week<92>s holiday-themed events will help give your Yuletide spirit a jump start.
First, this Thursday marks the arrival of downtown State College<92>s annual Tree Lighting Ceremony! Everyone is invited to this free event which features not only the lighting of the Christmas tree, but much more for the entire family to enjoy. For the kids, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be arriving in their sleigh, along with a group of real, live reindeer. After their arrival, Mrs. Claus will be staging a live reading of the famous children<92>s book The Polar Express. Several Penn State dance clubs will also be performing holiday entertainment, including Orchesis, Vol, and the Penn State Dance Team. Be sure to stay warm with holiday refreshments served throughout the event.
The ceremony will be taking place on south Allen Street near the Old Main gates this Thursday, November 16th from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. For more information call 814-238-7004.
Next, if you want to help others and to spread the Christmas spirit, Grace Lutheran Church is holding Operation Christmas Child. The event, which runs all week long from November 13th until November 20th, aims to collect shoeboxes filled with gifts for disadvantaged children around the world. Grace Lutheran will be collecting the shoeboxes and they will be collected and distributed during the Christmas season.
In addition to Grace Lutheran in State College, different collection centers in other towns can be located by calling 1-800-694-8176. People willing to donate to Operation Christmas Child should fill one or more normal sized shoeboxes with toys, candy, school supplies and other items appropriate for young children. A guide to packing a shoebox for Operation Christmas Child is available here. More details about the Operation Christmas Child program are available by visiting a Samaritan<92>s Purse.
