It’s another great weekend filled with things to do in Happy Valley!
Friday features the Boalsburg Wine Walk, Penn State soccer, theater, dance and more. A busy Saturday includes State College’s first urban-style outdoor flea market, the Patton Township Children’s Fair, The Great Insect Fair, Middle Eastern Dance Showcase, and many more things to see and do. And on Sunday, you can enjoy Grandparents Day at Millbrook Marsh and take your dog for a swim at Park Forest Pool.
On Sunday, the State College Choral Society will commemorate the 15th anniversary of 9/11 with a performance of Mozart’s Requiem.

FRIDAY
Antique Machinery Show
The 42nd Annual Nittany Antique Machinery Fall Show continues Friday through Sunday, dawn to dusk each day, at Penn’s Cave. With literally tons of tractors on display and dozens of activities, there will be plenty to do for all. Some activities include, antique tractors in operation, chainsaw carving, apple cider pressing, blacksmith shop, antique machinery in operation, food, live entertainment over 800 flea market vendors and crafts. Parking is free. $5 daily admission and children 12 and under get in free.
Greenwood Furnace Folk Gathering
A weekend of playing, singing, jamming, dancing and listening to folk music starts at 3 p.m. There are activities for all levels from non-musician to advanced players, and all ages from mature children through adult are welcome. Enjoy the friendly, relaxed setting at Greenwood Furnace State Park in Huntigdon. Forty-seven different workshops in eight time-slots cover a wide range of musical styles and interest. Enjoy 2 concerts, a contra and square dance, plus lots of formal and informal opportunities to jam. [More info]
Boalsburg Wine Walk
Experience samplings from some of the best wineries, vineyards, breweries and distilleries in PA at the Boalsburg Wine Walk from 5-9 p.m. on the Diamond in Boalsburg. Plus great food and music Tickets are available for $10 at Duffy’s Tavern, Mt. Nittany Vineyard, Seven Mountains Wine Bar in Boalsburg and at the event.
Penn State Soccer Doubleheader
The Penn State women’s soccer team returns home to Jeffrey Field to take on San Diego State at 5:30 p.m. Then at 8 p.m., the Nittany Lion men’s soccer team takes the pitch to square off against Saint Francis.
Spikes Host Deciding Playoff Game
The State College Spikes meet the Staten Island Yankees at 7 p.m. in the deciding game three of the New York-Penn League semifinals. The game starts at 7:05 p.m. at Medlar Field, and its $1 beer night from 6-8 p.m. Tickets are available at the Spikes ticket office, by calling (814) 272-1711 or at statecollegespikes.com
Nittany Theatre at the Barn
Nittany Theatre at the Barn presents its final two performances of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) [Revised] at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The show parodies the Bard’s plays with all of them being performed in comically short form by just three actors. [Ticket info]
TanzTheater at the State Theatre
TanzTheater presents ‘this little bit of life,’ a powerful and innovative new piece of dance theater from German choreographer Andre Koslowski, 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at the State Theatre.
SATURDAY
Hardcore Mudd Run
Hardcore Mudd Run, being held at 7 a.m. Saturday and 7:30 a.m. Sunday at Tussey Mountain, is a fun and challenging endurance event with a top-rated obstacle course race designed push you to your limits. Three different courses – sprint, ultra and extreme – are offered on both days. [More info]
Pop Up Ave
State College’s first urban-style outdoor flea market, Pop Up Ave comes to the Garner Street Parking Lot from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. The flea will feature a curated selection of vendors, local art, live music and more, plus activities for kids from Discovery Space and The Makery.
The Great Insect Fair
The Penn State Department of Entomology’s annual Great Insect Fair returns to Snider Ag Arena from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. See lots of insects with lots of activities, games, crafts, tasty treats and fun for everyone. Activities include bee hives, cockroach races, Insect Zoo, butterfly tents, bug collections and much more. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.
Patton Township Children’s Fair
Stop by the Target and Wegman’s parking lot at the Colonnade from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. for the Patton Township Children’s Fair. There are plenty of activities for kids, with ladder truck rides, bounce house, a Home Depot kids workshop, games, prizes and food. Plus Patton Township Police will be on hand for child safety seat inspections and kid fingerprinting, and there will be Internet safety and drug awareness stations.
Living History at the PA Military Museum
‘Then & NOW Living History Encampment/Bivouac’ is a timeline of uniforms and equipment from the 18th through 21st centuries from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday on the grounds of the Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg. Battle dress uniform show and weapons demonstrations begin at 1 p.m. each day. The Juniata Valley Council Nittany District of Boy Scouts of America also will be holding its carnival at 10 a.m. Saturday providing fun activities and games.
An Evening of Hope, Healing and Remembrance
Saturday is Suicide Prevention Day in Centre County and several community groups have come together to host this free, public event will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. at Millbrook Marsh. It will include speakers and an inter-generational performance piece focused on strength, hope, recovery, peace and voice,’ and will conclude with a candle-lighting. A community brown bag picnic will begin at 5:30 p.m.
Middle Eastern Dance Showcase
An exciting evening of Middle Eastern music and dance starting at 7:30 p.m. at Webster’s Bookstore Cafe will be headlined by Vanessa of Cairo, who is making a stop in State College as part of her limited U.S. summer tour. This show will also feature dancers from across the East Coast, and will highlight the classic and folkloric dances of Egypt and beyond. This event is family friendly and BYOB. Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door.
SUNDAY
Penn State Field Hockey Game and Youth Clinic
Penn State field hockey will host nearby foe Lock Haven in a noon game at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex. Following the game, Penn State Coaches and players will lead a free youth clinic for kids under 12. A medical release form is required to participate.
Nittany Lion Women’s Soccer vs. La Salle
The Penn State women’s soccer team closes out its non-conference schedule against La Salle at 1 p.m. at Jeffrey Field. Following match, the Nittany Lions will be hosting a post-match autograph session for fans.
Aqua Dogs at Park Forest Pool
Centre Region Parks and Rec will again offer “Aqua-Dog Day” from 2-4 p.m. on the first Sunday after the pool has closed for the 2016 season. For $5 per dog, people can bring their dogs for a swim at the Park Forest Community Swimming Pool, 2100 School Drive in Patton Township. Only dogs will be allowed in the pools, and human admission is free. Proceeds from the event will fund tree plantings at the new Oak Hall Regional Park. [Rules and info]
In Remembrance of 9/11
Remembering the fallen and honoring the heroes of September 11, 2011, the State College Choral Society will have a 15th anniversary commemoration performance of Mozart’s Requiem, augmented by members of the State College Area High School’s Master Singers and a 24-piece orchestra. Special guest performers from local elementary and middle school choirs will open the concert. A pre-concert lecture will begin at 2 p.m. [Ticket info]
Grandparents Day at Millbrook Marsh
Enjoy Grandparent’s Day with an eco-friendly scavenger hunt from 2-4 p.m. at Millbrook Marsh Nature Center. Families work together to explore the marsh for signs of nature and have a fun time together. This event is free, but donations are appreciated. At 4 p.m Millbrook Marsh hosts ‘Captain Aesop’s All-Star Galaxy Games,’ an original, interactive show for all ages. Unique creatures of all kinds will need your help as they exercise their bodies, minds, and feelings in a variety of cosmic challenges based on Aesop’s Fables.
