Happy Weekend, Happy Valley!

Football (college and high school), art, concerts, outdoor movies and much, much more are on a busy weekend calendar for the State College area.

We’ve compiled the highlights from the upcoming weekend’s community events in the State College area for you to enjoy. FRIDAY

Gallery Talk – Still Moving: Photographs of Steve McCurry
Stop by the Palmer Museum of Art to explore ‘Still Moving: Photographs by Steve McCurry’ and at 12:10 p.m. participate in an engaging conversation led by Joyce Robinson, curator, and Steven Rubin, associate professor of art, in the exhibition gallery located on the museum’s second floor. 

PSECU 502 Fest
Join the PSECU Financial Center for free food, games and prizes during the 502 Fest from 3-6 p.m. at 502 E. College Ave. The community is invited to stop by and learn about PSECU and also enjoy chair massages, adult tricycles and caricature art.

Just Kids Resale
The twice-a-year children’s consignment sale has 30,000 items in inventory, with deals on clothing, toys, books, games, baby and kid gear, sports equipment and much more. The sale is held 2-8 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m.-noon on Saturday (half-price day) at Lambert Hall, 303 Forge Road, Bellefonte.

Let’s Dance!
The ‘Let’s Dance!’ movement workshop for families will be held at 4 p.m. on the lawn of Penn State’s Ford Building. Free and open to the public, people of all ages are invited to attend the one-hour event at the corner of Park Avenue and Allen Road. No dancing or singing experience is required. Rain date is Sept. 30.

Sunset Music and Movies
Bring your blankets and spread out to enjoy a late summer with Centre Region Parks and Rec at Tudek Park, 400 Hermann Drive, State College. Biscuit Jam provides the music starting at 6 p.m. and as the late summer sky turns to night, catch the Tom Hanks classic ‘Big.’ Play some lawn games or snack on some popcorn (available for purchase)Event is free, but donations are appreciated. Donations support environmental education programs and operations at the Millbrook Marsh Nature Center.  Event is weather-permitting.

Movie on the Mountain
Another opportunity to catch an outdoor movie, Tussey Mountain’s free summer Movies on the Mountain wraps up the season with ‘Captain America: Civil War.’ Gates open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at dusk. Popcorn and candy will be available, as well as hot dogs, and other great food you won’t find at regular movie theaters. Soda, beer, and other beverages also are offered. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and watch a the movie under the stars.

Penn State Women’s Volleyball
The Nittany Lion women’s volleyball team is back home this weekend for the Penn State Invitational. Penn State faces Rhode Island at 7 p.m. The third of five promotional posters will be given out and fans who show their Penn State football ticket at the door can get a $4 ticket for the Rec Hall match.

Romeo & Juliet
The State Theatre will have a live HD Broadcast as the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company Live cinema season continues with a new vision of Shakespeare’s heartbreaking tale of forbidden love. Branagh and his creative team present a modern passionate version of the classic tragedy ‘Romeo & Juliet.’ Starring Richard Madden and Lily James, as Romeo and Juliet. The broadcast starts at 7 p.m. 

State High Football
State College Area plays its first home game of the season against Mifflin County at 7 p.m. at Memorial Field. The Little Lions come into the game at 2-0 and the Huskies at 0-2. And at the game State High and Penn State alum Matt Suhey will present his Golden Football for Super Bowl play to the State College Area School District.

SATURDAY

Women’s Volleyball X 2
Penn State women’s volleyball returns to the Rec Hall floor for two more games in the Penn State invitational. The Nittany Lions take on Howard at 10 a.m. and Clemson at 7 p.m. Commemorative poster 4 of 5 will be given out at the morning match, and the fifth at the evening match. Show your Penn State football ticket and get $4 tickets to the volleyball games. 

Saturday Stories Alive
Join Schlow Library for a half-hour of stories, fingerplays, and a hands-on activity to take home, starting at 11 a.m. in the Children’s Activity Room. Recommended for ages 2-7.

Bilingual Reading Corner: Italian Storytime
Barnes & Noble on Benner Pike will offer Italian Storytime as part of Bilingualism Matters at Penn State’s Bilingual Reading Corner event. The storytime session begins at 11:30 a.m. You don’t need to be a speaker of these languages to enjoy this story time, just come with an open mind and open ears.

Stripe Out Beaver Stadium
Of course the biggest draw in town this weekend is Penn State vs. Temple at Beaver Stadium at noon. It’s the Stripe Out game, so find out whether you should be wearing blue or white here. Penn State will be commemorating Joe Paterno’s first game as head coach. It’s also THON and Community Heroes Day and Faculty & Staff Day. Not going? The game airs on BTN.

SUNDAY

Bark for Life
The American Cancer Society’s Bark For Life, a non-competitive walk event for dogs and their owners to raise funds and awareness for the society’s fight against cancer, will be held on the grounds of the PA Military Museum in Boalsburg at noon. This event recognizes the difference a dog can make in helping people cope with cancer, while also remembering those canines who may be battling cancer themselves. So bring your best canine friend and join us for a fun-filled day starting with a walk, and then continuing with demonstrations, contests, and games. All humans and dogs are welcome.

Arts Festival Memories
Join the Centre County Historical Society at 2 p.m. in Centre Furnace Mansion for Arts Festival At Fifty – Arts Festival, Remembering And Making Memories, a family friendly celebration of the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts. Bring your favorite stories and early Arts Festival purchases to show and tell. Children (ages 4-12) will have the opportunity to create their own scrapbook to record their memories in. While you’re there, view the Arts Festival At Fifty: Stories Of The Early Days Exhibition.

Johnny Appleseed Day at Schlow
Kids can celebrate Johnny Appleseed with hats, an apple mobile, and an apple tower challenge from 2-4 p.m. in the Children’s Department of Schlow Library.

John Mayall at The State
For more than 50 years, John Mayall has served as a pioneer of blues music, rightly earning him the title, “The Godfather of British Blues.” In the midst of an artistic and career renaissance and following last year’s well-received album ‘Find a Way to Care,’ the legendary musician takes the State Theatre stage at 8 p.m. A portion of ticket sales will be donated to Clearwater Conservancy.
