Friday, April 29

Movies 

Vin Diesel and Paul Walker lead a reunion of returning all-stars from every chapter of the action franchise “The Fast and the Furious” in “Fast Five.” In this installment, former cop Brian O’Conner (Walker) partners with ex-con Dom Toretto (Diesel) on the opposite side of the law. The movie also features returning cast favorite Dwayne Johnson.        

Disney’s newest film, “Prom,” hits theaters this week. The movie details several intersecting stories unfolding at one high school as the big dance approaches. The film portrays prom as the precarious passage from high school to independence as some relationships unravel and others ignite.

Family

The Bellefonte YMCA is hosting a “Family Night Out” beginning at 6 p.m. The night includes swimming, Zumba, open gym and Wii games. Admission is free for members and $8 per non-member family.

Entertainment

Penn State’s free music festival, Movin’ On, starts at 3:30 p.m. The concert is located on IM Field West, at the corner of University Drive and Curtain Road. Headliners include Lupe Fiasco, O.A.R. and Little Big Town.

Toftrees Golf Resort and Conference Center is hosting a fund-raising art auction by Marlin Art to benefit the Clare Dahlia Snetsinger Art Awards of Excellence Scholarship Fund. The auction begins at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person and include complimentary light fare, door prizes, entertainment and silent and live auctions. A cash bar also will be available.

The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra hits the stage at The State Theatre at 8 p.m. The orchestra is recognized as one of the best all-around dance bands and has been fronted by several big-name vocalists including Frank Sinatra.        

Saturday, April 30

Family

Historic downtown Huntington is hosting “Mayfest.” The festival includes living history programs with period-correct dancing, music, re-enactors and demonstrations. There will also be plenty of children’s activities, food and craft vendors. Rain or shine, the event begins at 9 a.m. Free parking and admission.

The Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg is holding “Revolutionary Day.” Spectators are invited to experience the Colonial Period with examples of several standing armies that occupied America during the Revolutionary War. The event lasts from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Outdoor

Black Moshannon State Park is celebrating Earth Day beginning at 9 a.m. Community members are invited to help with projects such as trail maintenance, native plant gardening, winter debris removal and litter pickup. Pre-registration is required. A free lunch will be provided, and free camping is available to those who help throughout the day.

Food

The Mt. Nittany United Methodist Church is hosting a Community Dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. with an all-you-care-to-eat turkey dinner. Cost is $9 for ages 12 and up, $4.50 for ages 5 to 11. Take out is available.

Warriors Mark United Methodist Church is holding an all-you-can-eat Ham and Oyster Dinner from 4 to 7 p.m.

Entertainment

The Center for Well-Being in Lemont continues its Acoustic Brew Concert Series with the band “Four Shillings Short.” The group blends Celtic, Indian and American music and performs on more than 20 instruments including sitar, dulcimer, mandola, tin whistle, banjo and percussion. Tickets are $16.

Special Events

The Chatelaine Bed and Breakfast in Pine Grove Mills is hosting a “Royal Tea and Tour” of their grounds, patio, gazebo and carriage house in honor of the Royal Wedding. Attendees will enjoy wedding cake and punch as well as a chance to win a replica of Kate’s blue sapphire engagement ring. Admission is $30 per couple.    

Sports

Penn State women’s softball takes on Purdue at 5 p.m. at the Nittany Lion Softball Park.

Penn State is serving as the host for the 2011 Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Championships. The winners of Thursday and Friday’s matches play at 7 p.m. in Rec Hall.          

Late Night 

The band ‘Green Eggs’ hits the stage at Cafe 210 West at 10:30 p.m. All-day drink specials include $6 Captain Morgan pitchers and $5.50 Coors Light pitchers.

Sunday, May 1

DVD Releases

This week’s only major theatrical film released on DVD is “3 Idiots,” a Bollywood comedy about the antics of three college students in a prestigious engineering university in India. The film revolves around the flashbacks of two of the young men, 10 years after graduation, as they go on a quest to find their missing friend whose wisdom and rebellious ways changed their lives for the better.

Family

A second “Revolutionary Day” is taking place at the Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Bellefonte Class of 2013 Parent Association is sponsoring a Cash Bingo Extravaganza at Bellefonte High School. Doors and kitchen open at 1:30 p.m., Early Bird games at 2:30 p.m. and regular Bingo at 3 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Ticket includes 20 regular games of bingo. A 50/50 drawing, silent auction and food will also be available for purchase.

Otto’s Pub and Brewery is hosting “Juice Box Jams” at 11:30 a.m. featuring music with Kelly Countermine and brunch buffet. Tickets are sold in advance only.

Food

Brownie Troop 4-1230, with help from all Centre County Girl Scout Troops, is hosting a “Big Bake-Off” bake sale at PAWS on from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Baked goodies will be on sale to help raise money to support PAWS. A local Boy Scout will also be selling hot dogs and water for $1 each to fund his Eagle Scout project.

Sports

Penn Skates is holding the State College Area Roller Derby Spring Breakout featuring the Hoover’s Honeys vs. Machine Gun Kellys. The doors open at 6 p.m. and the action begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10.

Penn State women’s softball takes on Purdue at noon.
