The State College girls’ varsity volleyball team put together an impressive 20-1 record in 2018, but fell to eventual PIAA champion North Allegheny. Head coach Chad Weight, now in his 10th season with the Little Lady Lions, is hoping the girls can do just one game better in 2019, and bring a state title to State College.
Nine letter winners return this season, including Ava Wagner, Vanessa McGhee, Kacy Sekunda, Lauren Arnold, Kate Lachendro, Caitlyn Rodgers, Anjelica Rubin, Elena Spielvogel and Ariana Angus.
Weight said despite the number of letter winners returning, the team is still rather inexperienced.
Lost to graduation were 2018 seniors Leah Henderson, Jess Irwin, Katie Finlan, Erin Lutz, Emily Kyle and Kayla Moran.
Weight said both he and the girls have the same goals in 2019 — to get better every day.
State College won its opening match of the season with a 3-0 sweep at Red Land on Tuesday.
The Lady Little Lions are back in action Thursday with their first home contest of the season, taking on Chambersburg in the North gym. JV starts at 5:30 followed by the varsity matchup.
