After a seemingly endless winter, State College’s weather has made a quick leap from spring to summer-like conditions in the past week.
The area’s reputation for erratic weather has been reaffirmed over the past three days, with temperatures pushing into the upper 70s. This burst of warmth has pushed temperatures well above historical average. We’re usually in the upper 50s for this time in April.
How are people making the most of this early taste of summer? By enjoying in sunshine in any manner possible, of course.
Across the Penn State campus, what are typically just open green spaces occupied by squirrels and rabbits have been taken over by students turning lawns into makeshift “beaches” for sport, studying or just enjoying some Vitamin D.
On the opposite side of College Avenue, businesses with outdoor seating have seen a surge in customers due to the warm weather. Locals and students alike have been jamming into Café 210 West, Inferno, Kiwi Frozen Yogurt and many other downtown eateries at all times of day throughout the week.
Tee times at Penn State’s Blue and White Courses have been hard to come by, and even with the warm streak coming to an end, reservations are sparse through the end of the week.
Unfortunately, with Wednesday night’s thunderstorms comes a cold front that will bring us back to temperatures more typical of this time of year. For while it lasted, however, the much-needed dose of summer was a welcome reminder that in a few short weeks, the bright sun and warm temperatures will, once again, become the norm.
