Speculation swirls about Ray Gricar link to Sandusky scandal

As court officials in Centre County prepare for the security and media logistics of next week’s preliminary hearing for Jerry Sandusky, investigators remain tight lipped about a possible connection to a missing district attorney who investigated allegations against him.

Ray Gricar looked into allegations against the former Penn State assistant coach back in 1998, went missing in 2005 and was legally pronounced dead this summer.

Bellefonte Police Chief Shawn Weaver told 6News that he was bombarded with interview requests from the national media when Sandusky was charged last month.

“We were kind of expecting it, and quite honestly, I refused to really answer questions, if there is any involvement,” said Weaver. “Hopefully, at least for our investigation, it is getting Ray Gricar’s information back out there in a much larger scale than we ever hoped … to reach.”

Last month, 6News reported that investigators from several agencies searched a Blair County cemetery for Gricar’s body.

Prosecutors told The Associated Press in November that they do not believe that there is any link between Sandusky and Gricar, but that a Bellefonte police detective would review Gricar’s records from 1998.

Sandusky is expected to face a judge on 40 counts of alleged child molestation at a preliminary hearing on Dec. 13 inside the Centre County courthouse.
