Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center reopened on Thursday following a 16-month closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

All activities and hiking trails will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Penn State’s nature center in Petersburg. Visitors can check out a number of attractions at Shaver’s Creek, including:

  • Litzinger Herpetarium and Discovery Room, home to over a dozen salamanders, frogs, turtles, and snakes
  • Klingserg Aviary, home to a variety of hawks, owls, eagles, vultures, and falcons
  • Hiking trails
  • Visitor center, bookstore, and picnic areas

In-person summer camps already began earlier this summer, and other in-person programs and events will resume. A full schedule of available programs is updated regularly on Shaver’s Creek’s website.

Visitors must follow Penn State’s protocols for masking and social distancing. Fully vaccinated people are not required to wear masks indoors, while masks are required for unvaccinated individuals. Social distancing and outdoor mask requirements have been lifted for everyone.
