Gary C. Schultz, a former senior vice president for finance and business at Penn State, will return to that role on an interim basis, the university announced Friday.
The announcement came about 10 days after Penn State announced the impending departure of Albert G. Horvath, who has held the position since 2007. Horvath has been named chief financial officer at the Smithsonian — effective Sept. 26.
Schultz, who retired from Penn State in 2009, will begin his interim appointment at the university the same month. The university, meanwhile, will begin a national search for Horvath’s successor, according to a written statement.
‘We are grateful to Gary for interrupting his retirement and stepping back into this position,’ university President Graham Spanier said in the announcement. ‘His leadership during this transition will be extremely beneficial and allow us to conduct a deliberate search for the best candidate. His distinguished career at Penn State and his in-depth knowledge of the university make him an excellent choice to oversee operations once again that allow the critical work of the university to continue.’
Schultz served as senior vice president for finance and business and as the university treasurer for about 14 years before his retirement. His overall career at Penn State spanned nearly 40 years.
Meanwhile, according to the university’s announcement, Spanier has named a 12-person search advisory committee to review potential candidates for the senior vice presidency. Penn State has hired Liz Neumann, a parnter in the Brill Neumann Executive Search Consulting firm, to assist with the search, according to the announcement.
