The next pre-trial proceeding in the Jerry Sandusky criminal case, set for Monday morning, should be a relatively short, straightforward event, according to Centre County court officials.
Scheduled for 11 a.m. in Bellefonte, the public hearing is to last 30 minutes or fewer and will include no witnesses, the court has announced. It will be held in the county’s Annex Courtroom, across High Street from the main courthouse.
That facility has only limited seating, as court officials have noted. Sandusky himself is not expected to appear, as the Patriot-News has reported.
At issue is exactly how much information state prosecutors should turn over to Sandusky’s defense team before a planned trial. The lead defense attorney, Joseph Amendola, is seeking a more-specific Bill of Particulars in the case’s pre-trial discovery phase. He wants the state to share the precise times, dates and days of the week when Sandusky’s alleged offenses happened.
Sandusky, 68, of College Township, is charged with 52 criminal counts in the child-sexual-abuse case.
Among other sought-after details, Amendola wants to know the specific locations where the activity is reported to have happened, along with “the identity of the individuals who were present at the location or in close proximity thereto … when the alleged illegal activity occurred … .”
Sandusky, a former Penn State assistant football coach, last appeared in court for a hearing Feb. 10, when Amendola argued — successfully — for a loosening of Sandusky’s bail restrictions. He remains under house arrest, but is now able to visit, under limited conditions, with his grandchildren and a select number of friends.
Jury selection for his planned trial is set for May 14. Judge John M. Cleland, presiding in the case, has denied a defense request for a two-month delay in the trial schedule. He will be on the bench for Monday’s hearing.
