Update: Work was completed early and the detour has been lifted as of Friday, May 12, according to PennDOT.

Original story:

A section of Park Avenue in State College will be closed for up to 12 days in May for PennDOT and the borough to perform utility work.

Beginning May 8 and continuing as late as May 19, West Park Avenue will be closed between North Atherton Street and North Allen Street, according to PennDOT. Work will include repairs to a storm sewer pipe and the sanitary sewer system.

The official detour in place during the closure will direct northbound drivers to use University Drive, East College Avenue and North Atherton Street. Southbound drivers will be detoured to North Atherton Street, East Beaver Avenue and University Drive. Signage will be in place to direct motorists.

Traffic traveling around the closure after May 15 could also be impacted by a short local eastbound detour on the Atherton Street project.

North Allen Street will remain open and will be accessible from East Park Avenue to the Penn State campus and the East College Heights neighborhood.

“Motorists will need to remain alert for stopped or slowed traffic as they travel through the detour,” according to a PennDOT news release. “This area sees a high volume of traffic, so motorists should expect travel delays and will need to be patient.”

State College Borough will be replacing the storm sewer pipe, sanitary sewer line and curbing. PennDOT will provide traffic control and roadway restoration work.
