Penn State’s Bus Research and Test Center will focus on bus safety during a segment on the CBS News program ‘Sunday Morning’ at 9 a.m.
According to a news release on Penn State Live, CBS producer John D’Amilio and reporter Peter Greenberg visited campus in April to film a ‘comprehensive analysis undertaken by the facility on the performance of new bus models.’
Interviewed for the segment were the center’s director, David Klinikowski and the owner of the Fullington Bus Company, Mike Fullington. The program examines a range of safety concerns from vehicle durability to the availability and use of passenger seat belts in motor coaches, the press release said.
The bus center is a part of the Thomas D. Larson Pennsylvania Transportation Institute at Penn State. It was authorized by the Federal Transit Administration to perform rigorous reviews of any new model buses that a manufacturer intends to make available for purchase by municipalities, Penn State said.
The center has examined nearly 400 different bus makes and models and has documented more than 8,000 malfunctions, both large and small, since it began in 1989.
The center’s efforts allow manufacturers to make corrections and modifications before vehicles advance to the production stage, the press release said.
The Penn State facility has tested vehicles ranging from minivans to articulated city buses and intercity motor coaches.
