Well, CBS Sports seems to have ended the age-old debate of who the best college football team in the state of Pennsylvania really is.
CBS Sports college football writers Jerry Hinnen and Robby Kalland collaborated to pinpoint the best college football team in each state headed into 2015, bestowing the honor of best team in Pennsylvania to its rightful owners.
Penn State was given the honor over Pitt, giving the Nittany Lions an even stronger case in the seemingly never-ending argument. While Pitt fans may refute CBS Sports’ claim, this is what Hinnen and Kalland had to say about Dear Old State.
It would be nice if the head-to-head method for picking between the Nittany Lions and their old rivals at Pitt would hurry up and make its return already. Until then: Pat Narduzzi was a great hire, and the Panthers have some talented returning players in James Conner and Tyler Boyd. But the Nittany Lions have Christian Hackenberg, perhaps the nation’s most underrated defensive coordinator in Bob Shoop, and a schedule that could have them favored in as many as 10 games. We’ll take PSU, the standard bearer in the state.
The two make an excellent point. While Pitt is no run-of-the-mill program given the bevy of talent spread across the roster, Penn State is simply the better team. The Panthers could make a case on the offensive side of the ball, with First Team All-ACC wide receiver Tyler Boyd playing in the mold of Pitt legend Larry Fitzgerald, but a quarterback debate is out of the question. Christian Hackenberg is the better signal caller, and Penn State’s formidable defense is second-to-none. Panther supporters may disagree, but this writer thinks CBS Sports hit the nail on the head.
We’ll just leave this here, Pitt fans. See you in 2016!
