Morris Kurtz has joined Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics as a Special Assistant, Penn State confirmed to StateCollege.com Wednesday morning.
In his role, Kurtz will assist current Athletic Director Dave Joyner with special administrative and budget projects. Additionally Kurtz will assist Associate Athletic Director Joe Battista and the NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey programs as they move into the new Pegula Ice Arena for the 2013-14 season. The 2013-14 season also marks the inaugural year of Big Ten men’s hockey.
Kurtz retired as Athletic Director of St. Cloud State in June of 2012. The Huskies are considered to be one of the nation’s more consistent men’s hockey programs making the NCAA Tournament eight times since 2000. Currently the Huskies are preparing to play in the NCAA Men’s Hockey Frozen Four and will take on Quinnipiac on April 11 for a chance to play for the national title.
Before making his way to St. Cloud State, Kurtz coached the Penn State Icers to a 24-6-1 from 1974 until 1976. He earned his masters degree and his PhD from Penn State. He attended the school from 1973-79.
