Penn State Field Hockey Falls to Maryland in Double Overtime

No. 6 Penn State field hockey (12-3, 4-2 Big Ten) suffered a tough 2-1 defeat in double overtime at the hands of No. 16 Maryland (10-5, 5-2 Big Ten) Sunday afternoon in College Park.

The lone Penn State goal was scored by redshirt freshman Abby Myers shortly after Maryland opened the scoring in the second half, but a winner in the extra periods pushed the Terrapins to victory.

How It Happened

Goals were tough to come by in this one, and each team played stout defensively. Jenny Rizzo played an outstanding game for Penn State in goal, saving 10 out of 12 shots on net. The offense struggled to get offensive chances against Maryland’s defense and goalie Sarah Holliday, who saved 10 out of the 11 Nittany Lion shots on goal.

After a scoreless first half in which neither team could get going offensively, Maryland struck first with a goal from Lein Holsboe at the beginning of the second half. Penn State responded quickly when Abby Myers put one home after a mad scramble in front of the Maryland net. Much of the offensive action came from chaos in front of the net, and neither team ever got in any sort of passing rhythm.

Carrie Hanks finished off the Nittany Lions in the second overtime period to secure its revenge in the rematch of last year’s Big Ten Championship.
