With the annual Penn State Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon just a few months away, organizers are stirring buzz around the philanthropy today with a 100 Days ’til THON event on campus.

The 100 Days celebration is scheduled to continue through 4 p.m. in the HUB-Robeson Center, University Park. Featured attractions there will include performances by the Lionettes and Penn State’s feature twirler, Matt Freeman, according to a news release. Finalists from the THON Idol contest are scheduled to perform at 1 p.m., and judges will pick the best three. That trio will perform during THON weekend in February, set for Feb. 18, 19 and 20.

In addition, contestants for the Mr. and Mrs. THON Pageant will be introduced at 2:15 p.m. Other activities in the HUB are to include a mail-making table, a merchandise sale and a random-act-of-kindness pledge.

Later, at 4:30 p.m., supporters will hold a ‘silent rave’ on the Old Main lawn. Organizers are encouraging them to bring MP3 players with headphones and to dance with their friends and fellow supporters. A THON playlist is available via the 100 Days ’til THON Facebook page.

Afterward, rave participants will assemble to spell out ‘FTK’ — for ‘For the Kids’ — in giant letters on the Old Main lawn. Aerial photos will be taken.

A variety of other THON-oriented events are happening across State College and on campus today. A Coldstone Creamery Scoops for the Kids fundraiser is slated for 5 to 10 p.m. at Coldstone Creamery, 321 E. Beaver Ave.

Billed as the largest student-run philanthropy in the world, THON raises money to support pediatric-cancer patients and research.
