Penn State used another signature second half run to cut a 19-point Michigan lead to four with 2:38 remaining in the game but couldn’t seal the deal, falling, 71-65 in the final home game of the year.
Jermaine Marshall led the way for the Nittany Lions, scoring 27 points while pulling down eight rebounds, while making up for a struggling, Tim Frazier who went 4-16 from the field for 11 points after being saddled with two early fouls.
No. 13 Michigan (23-8, 13-5 Big Ten) found most of its offense from behind the arc, going 10-18 from 3-point range, led by Evan Smotrycz and Tim Hardaway Jr., who scored 17 and 19 points, respectively.
Ross Travis continued his strong play, going 5-5 from the field with six rebounds and was instrumental to the Nittany Lions’ comeback.
“We knew as long as there was time left on the clock we had a chance,” Marshall said. “Coach (Pat Chambers) kept telling us to play with heart, and we knew we had more to give. As a team, we stuck together and cut in to their lead. That’s what happens when you play as a team.”
Penn State (12-19, 4-14) will face Indiana Thursday in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament.
