Penn State senior guard Tim Frazier has been granted a Medical Hardship Waiver by the NCAA and one additional season of eligibility to return for the Nittany Lions’ 2013-14 season Penn State announced Wednesday.

“Tim has shown tremendous will, perseverance and leadership as he continues his rehabilitation from a very tough injury,” Penn State coach Patrick Chambers said. “He is doing very well. We are thrilled for him that he will have the opportunity finish his career strong and again place himself among the top players in the nation.”

Frazier entered this past season a 2012 first-team All-Big Ten selection but suffered a torn Achilles tendon in his left leg just minutes into Penn State’s fourth game of the 2012-13 season, missing the remainder of the year.

Frazier led the team averaging 21.7 points and 5.0 assists per game entering the Akron game in the Puerto Rico Tipoff on Nov. 18 in which he was injured.

One of Penn State’s all-time greats, Frazier will enter the 2013-14 season ranked 24th on Penn State’s all-time scoring charts with 1,035 points and sixth with 459 career assists, just 142 shy of breaking the Nittany Lions’ all-time record. He has 20 career 20-point or better outings and 43 double-digit scoring games to his credit.

Over the past weeks Frazier has begun to rehabilitate more basketball specific skills such as running on a treadmill, something he was unable to do without assistance following his surgery.

Penn State enters this summer following a disappointing second season under head coach Patrick Chambers. Much of the Nittany Lions’ roster will return along with the addition of four freshman and Pitt transfer guard John Johnson in 2013. A strong ending to the 2012-13 season has many fans optimistic about the upcoming season, Frazier’s return –although expected– will only add to the building hype.
