Patton Township Church Damaged in Fire

Fire damaged a Centre Region church early Saturday morning, causing a partial collapse of the building.

Alpha Fire Company was dispatched to Woodycrest United Methodist Church, 219 W. Clearview Ave. in Patton Township, at about 12:20 a.m. for a “well-involved fire” in the roof, according to a post by Centre County Emergency Alerts and Information.

The fire was controlled by 1 a.m., but extensive overhaul and salvage was needed.

The sanctuary had extensive damage, and the roof over half of the building was removed. Signs posted around the church stated that it has been determined to be unsafe and occupancy is prohibited.

No one was in the church at the time of the fire, Pastor Renee Ford wrote on Facebook. One firefighter was taken to the hospital for a hand injury, according to Centre County Emergency Alerts.

The church needs to wait for a fire marshal investigation to be completed before restoration can begin, Ford wrote. Sunday worship will be held at 10 a.m. in the church parking lot.

“People are asking how they can help. Our immediate need is prayers,” Ford wrote. “We are grateful to our first responders and to the outpouring of love.”

Alpha Fire Company did not return a phone call seeking additional information about the fire.

In addition to Alpha, Boalsburg, Pleasant Gap and Port Matilda fire companies and Centre LifeLink EMS responded to the scene.
