Zales jewelry store recently closed its Nittany Mall location, and Matthew’s Hallmark Shop is planning to close in February.
A sign at the former Zales location directed patrons to visit the company’s website or call 1-800-311-JEWEL for continued customer service. It also encouraged them to visit Kay Jewelers in the mall. Both retailers are owned by Signet Jewelers.
In March, Signet said it planned to close more than 200 locations but open new stores outside of shopping malls. Most of the closures were expected occur after the holiday shopping season at malls with multiple Signet stores, according to MarketWatch.
Hallmark, a longtime mall staple, will close on Feb. 25, according to a sign posted in the store’s window.

The mall saw the closure of two anchor stores and a number of smaller businesses throughout 2018, while also welcoming a few new additions.
Sears and Bon-Ton both vacated their anchor locations amid nationwide closings for the department store chains. Charlotte Russe, Things Remembered, Pearle Vision, Regis Salon, Auntie Anne’s Pretzels, RC’s Dogs, Garfield’s Restaurant and Pub and Old State Deli all closed their mall locations in 2018.
Some businesses, however, did open in the Nittany Mall this year. Can’s Art returned to the mall in the fall after initially closing in 2017, and next door Native Crafts also opened. Dance Academy of State College opened a new studio in the mall. Happy Wraps replaced Old State Deli, and Chinese Hot Pot (Gudong) took over the former Auntie Anne’s location.
Happy Dishes restaurant and KnB’s Inflatables Please indoor family entertainment center are both planning to open in the mall in 2019.
