West Cherry Lane in State College will be closed on Wednesday for work related to PennDOT’s North Atherton Street project.
The road will be closed from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. for contractors to do permanent patching associated with earlier drainage work on the right southbound lane of North Atherton Street, according to PennDOT. A signed detour will be in place.
A longterm lane closure remains in place through Dec. 20 for the far right southbound heading toward the university between Blue Course Drive and Woodland Drive. While the contractor is not working, two lanes will remain open for inbound traffic and two lanes will remain open for outbound traffic. While the contractor is working, traffic will be reduced to a single lane for inbound traffic.
Two lanes in both directions will remain open Thursday through Sunday and no additional lane closures will be implemented during that time for the Thanksgiving holiday and Penn State football weekend.
Before Thursday, drivers may also encounter single lane traffic northbound for Verizon wire installation between Park Avenue and Woodland Drive and between North Hills Place and Blue Course Drive for installation of a retaining wall.
Earlier this month, the posted speed limit throughout the work zone was reduced to 35 miles per hour and that will remain in effect until the project is completed in October 2019.
PennDOT also reminds pedestrians that current crossings through the length of the project are at the intersections at Aaron Drive, Hillcrest Avenue and Park Avenue. Crossing at other locations is not recommended. Drivers should be alert for pedestrians, bicyclists and buses.
The Atherton Street project is taking place through 2019 and is being done in phases between Aaron Drive and Park Avenue. Overall work on the project will include relocation of utility lines, sewer and water lines, drainage improvements, curbing, sidewalks, ADA ramps, traffic signal upgrades, a new concrete median and paving.
