NFL Scouting Combine: Penn State Players Look Ahead to Pro Day

It’s recovery time for some of the seven former Penn State football players who participated in the NFL Scouting Combine.

Better to get in a breather now, because Penn State hosts its Pro Day on March 14, and that is the last impression many NFL scouts will have of the prospects before April’s NFL Draft. Devon Still, Johnnie Troutman, Jack Crawford, Derek Moye, Chaz Powell, D’Anton Lynn and Nate Stupar all participated in the Combine, which concluded Tuesday.

The Combine, of course, is the much-hyped, weeklong event of mental and physical testing featuring the top prospects for the upcoming draft with a few draft hopefuls.

Powell roomed with former LSU corner Morris Claiborne, regarded as the best defensive back prospect in the NFL draft and who is projected to go in the top 5 in many mock drafts. Powell is projected as an undrafted free agent but could sneak in as a late-round pick.

Both also converted to defense from wide receiver — though Claiborne did so a week into fall practice of his freshman year, and Powell permanently moved from receiver to corner in 2010.

And, yes, they chatted about the 2010 Capital One Bowl between LSU and PSU — and the swampy, chewed up field conditions.

Claiborne can rest assured he’ll have millions soon enough. Powell, like many of the Penn Staters who went to the Combine in Indianapolis Feb. 22-28, just wanted to make a mark.

“It was a blessing,” said Powell, who is back in York, Pa. resting for a few days before resuming his training for Pro Day.  “After my career at Penn State, they knew about me. They watched film on me. They asked me what I can bring to the table.’

Powell said he had conversations with the Broncos, Saints, Buccaneers and Titans. He trained for the Combine at D1 Sports Training in Nashville and signed with agent Deryk Gilmore, who played on Penn State’s 1986 national championship team.

Defensive tackle Devon Still is the only projected first-round pick among Penn State players. CBSSports.com’s Rob Rang had him going No. 25 overall to the Broncos. Rang’s colleague, Dane Brugler, slots him at No. 20 to the Titans.

Still trained for the Combine in Miami and was focused on rehabbing the turf toe injury that slowed him at the end of the 2011 season. He signed with high-profile agent Drew Rosenhaus.

“I feel like he’s a dog and gonna be a dog in the negotiation room,” Still said last month at the memorial service for Joe Paterno.

Another draft hopeful, former wide receiver Derek Moye, trained at IMG Academies in Bradenton, Fla., but was returning to State College on Thursday from Pittsburgh in preparation for Pro Day.

Moye said he caught every pass during drills at the Combine and was pleased with his route running. He said he had not heard much about his draft prospects.

“I thought it went pretty well,” Moye said of his Combine experience, which included a 40 time of 4.52 seconds. “I hoped to run a little faster time, but I still think I’m in a pretty good position with the time I ran.”
